Ponsetto was the first freshman to start as quarterback at the University of Michigan. In 1944, Ponsetto was named to the All-Big Ten Conference team as a sophomore and also named to the All-American blocking team. He was captain of the Michigan Team in 1945. In his senior season at Central High in 1942, he was named quarterback and captain of the All-Saginaw Valley Conference football team.
