A state Golden Gloves boxing champion, he won the welterweight title in the 1955 National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament while posting a record of 29-2-1. He compiled a college career record of 78-6 at Michigan State University and was a semifinalist in the 1956 tryouts for the U.S. Olympic boxing team. He turned down an opportunity to box professionally in favor of attending medical school.
