Matthews was a Greco-Roman wrestler who competed in the Olympic Games in 1976 and was a member of the 1980 Olympic team that boycotted the Games. He won a gold medal in the 163-pound division at the 1979 Pan-American Games. An eight-time national champion, he was considered the best wrestler in the history of Central Michigan University.
