A three-sport standout at Southwestern High, earning Class A All-State honors in football, basketball and baseball. Helped to pitch and bat Carpets by Jim Smith to the 1974 National Connie Mack World Series championship. All-American quarterback in football and outfielder in baseball at the University of Michigan. Finished third in Heisman Trophy voting in 1978 after leading Michigan to third straight berth in Rose Bowl. Drafted in the first round by the Detroit Tigers in 1979.
