Johnson was an All-State center and linebacker at Central High where he starred in football, basketball and track from 1943-46. Johnson was director of basketball, flag football and softball for the Flint Department of Parks and Recreation from 1960-90. He was named Michigan Softball Commissioner of the Year in 1985 by the Michigan Amateur Softball Association.
