Jakowczk starred in three sports at St. Mary High where in 1942 he became the first player from a parochial school to be named to the All-City football backfield. An outstanding performer in American Legion baseball and also in the city league. Played five years in the Philadelphia Phillies’ farm system including at Terre Haute, Ind. In the Three 1 League where in 1948 he batted .333 with 14 home runs.
