He compiled a legendary record during a 36-year coaching career when he directed the high school track programs at Mt. Morris St. Mary, Hoover, Kearsley and Central. He is the only coach in Michigan to win state championships in three enrollment classifications. Gay won in Class C-D at Mt. Morris St. Mary , Class B at Kearsley and Class A at Central. He was a state champion in the half-mile at Washington High and anchored for relay teams at Western Michigan.
