Seven of the eight runners on the team (Don Sleeman, Larry Wiltse, Jim Austin, Fred Gross, Larry Irwin, John Fox and Doug Sutherland) were all from Genesee County. Mike Waddell was the only one who was not (Walled Lake).
The 1961 Flint Junior College cross country team finished its undefeated season by winning the National Junior College Cross Country Championship.
And now, 52 years later, the team will be recognized for its accomplishments with an induction into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame on Dec. 7 at the Genesys Athletic Club in Grand Blanc.
