Compton was an extraordinary leader and unselfish team leader. He earned seven letters at Western Michigan University where he captained the freshman basketball team. Bernie was a member of the 1943-44 WMU basketball team that was ranked fourth nationally. At St. Mary High, he won the State Class C championship.
