Johnson was starting linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings from 1980-84 before finishing his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1985. He was a three-year starter and All-American linebacker at the University of Southern California, where he played in three Rose Bowls and on the 1974 national championship team. He was an All-State end at Northwestern High.
