Winer considered himself the ultimate team player. He starred in city recreation leagues as basketball player, golfer, bowler and softball pitcher. He once pitched 16 straight victories. Winer won the City Open golf tournament in 1943 and was a doubles champion in tennis in 1934 at Central High.
