Noted for his work in race relations while coach and principal at Northern High, Houston was the first high school coach to be inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. His 148-41-13 record as football coach included Saginaw Valley Conference championships in 24 years. His teams also won state titles and under his direction Northern became known as the “School of Champions”.
